How Work at Home Parents Can Deduct Their at Home Expenses at Tax Time

How Work at Home Parents Can Deduct Their at Home Expenses at Tax Time

There are tons of parents who choose to work from home in order to benefit their family. Mostly it is family with young children. The reason for this is that most people find childcare to be overly expensive in addition to the fact that parents just want to spend more time with their children.
What some parents don't realize is that you can actually deduct some of your expenses on your tax return, just because you are working from home. In order to do this you will need to make sure that you keep very accurate records.
The first thing that you will need to do is find out if you qualify. When it comes to the IRS they have very strict guidelines that you have to follow exactly. One of the qualifications is that you need to work at home on a regular basis in order to be able to deduct certain expenses.
There are some people who choose to stay home from work once in a while, but if this is your situation then you will not quality. The best thing to do in order to find out if you qualify is to talk to your tax preparer and they will be able to tell you what you qualify for and the steps that you need to take. In some cases you may be able to even deduct your water, heat, and electric.
They usually allow you to deduct a portion of your average yearly bill. There are some other indirect expenses that you may be able to take advantage of so make sure you ask about these. As your tax preparer will tell you it is all about the records that you keep. That is one point that I can not stress enough.
Bad records can mean the difference between getting money back from the government and owing the government money. If you are not good when it comes to keeping records then you may want to invest some money in hiring someone to do this for you. It may mean a little more money up front but in the long run you will definitely benefit. There are also some special deductions that are allowed for various types of businesses.
This would include but not limited to deductions on your home loan, and in other areas. The bottom line is that you need to ask your tax preparer as many questions as possible. If they are not willing to explain thing to you thoroughly then you may be better off speaking with a different tax consultant. There really are a lot of allowable deductions for parents who choose to work at home, so make every effort to get what you can.

Highest Paying Work-at-Home Jobs that Don't Require a Degree

So you found out you are having a baby or maybe relocating to a new area and wish to explore the world of work-at-home careers? With a few months preparation, you too can be on your way to a high paying home-based career. Some of the best paying opportunities can have training that is completed in a few months, and you can be on your way to making an excellent salary, while enjoying flexible work hours and working from the comfort of your home. Some great ideas for short-term, profitable careers are as follows: Translation - for those that took a language in high school or college, translation careers are one of the best paying careers offered to home workers. While your language skills may need refreshed, there are many colleges who offer language classes and will let you audit a class for a reduced fee. In addition, many offer continuing education classes where you can brush-up on your language skills online. MIT Open  offers free lessons that were developed by MIT instructors in all academic disciplines. Textbooks used in the actual class are listed, so you can purchase one and follow along with each lesson.
Medical/Legal Transcription - this field is open for individuals who can type fast and lean terminology and formatting, in classes and programs that usually last two terms. While there are many online schools that offer medical terminology, a community college generally costs less, and instructors are in the classroom to provide immediate feedback. The same can be said with legal transcription. Stenographers and scopists are two high paying careers that can be completed in about six months. While these jobs can be performed at home, it is important to note that employees usually have to provide their own equipment, which in addition to a computer and internet can cost a few hundred dollars.
Editors/Proofreaders - these careers are perfect for people who are great with details. Should you choose the transcription route, with experience and certification, editors are needed to proofread transcriptionists' dictation. These jobs pay higher than general transcription jobs, and usually require three year's experience. In addition, all require some education which is great for networking and potential job leads. With proper research and education, a work-at-home career can pay and employee more than their previous brick and mortar job.

The Life and Times of a Work at Home Mom

The Life and Times of a Work at Home mom

So, you want to stay at home with your children; but you need a second source of income. Granted that source won't have to be as great as you were making away from home because of the money you are saving in gas, dry cleaning, lunches out, frequent oil changes, not to mention panty hose replacements. Also worthy of mention are savings in day care, taxes (your home or at least part of it is now tax deductible), and the two-hour daily commute-after all time is money. I can really feel your pain and that burning desire to be home with your darling little ones. Of course they are angels when you miss out on 8-10 hours of their daily lives five days a week. Goodness knows the guilt of leaving them with others is almost unbearable. Trust me, this too shall pass. All right, now that we've established your desire to work from home and your reasons for wanting to do so let's move on the nitty-gritty of work at home life. First of all your children are not going to suddenly become victims of the pods and sit quietly by as you work your fingers to the bone from 9-5. Dinner will not cook itself, and every piece of dust in your house will suddenly stand up and put on neon blinkers to draw your attention decidedly away from both the computer screen and the telephone. Your youngest will kick and scream and throw tantrums in foreign languages in order to overcome the voice on the other end of the phone line. Your first-born will experiment with new methods of setting off the smoke detector at critical moments of concentration. Your husband will expect that since you've been home all day dinner will be waiting promptly at 6 and the clothes will not only neatly fold and press themselves but walk themselves to his closet shelves as well. Your children will want your undivided attention because you have tried your level best to ignore their existence all day long as you heroically attempt to meet your deadline.
All these things will happen. Let me say that again. All these things will happen. Maybe not exactly in the scenarios I've presented previously but in a manner befitting those you love most, it will happen. Neighbors, friends, and family will also join in the torment and assume that since you are home you are available for whatever need they have. I swear they think we sit around eating bon bons and watching Oprah all day. You will battle with people who feel that you should never have a speck of dust showing in your home since you don't really do anything all day and there are those who simply think that you aren't working unless you drive to an office to do it. I tell you these things now so that you understand and are prepared for them when they happen.
I am by no means trying to talk you out of this dream. I am trying to convey the importance of entering into this with a realistic vision of the struggle it will be. There are going to be times when you will ask yourself why on earth you wanted to work at home. There will be times when Antarctica will seem too close to be to your children. You love them, yes. But sometimes you need a dump truck full of patience rather than a cup. There will be days when you feel as though you are so far behind that you will never catch up, and there will be days when you think you've got this work from home thing down. You're in the groove, everything fits into your schedule perfectly and you can really do this. Then tomorrow comes and you're waiting once again for Calgon to come along and take you away.
These are the rewards for working at home. Even though it sometimes takes 80 hours to get in 40 hours of actual work, you have the flexibility to stop what you are doing to bake cookies and read a story at your son's kindergarten class. You are home to watch your baby's first steps and hear her first words. You get to laugh as she sits noisily with her phone at her ear imitating your pitch. You will smile when your children tell other children that their mommy doesn't leave them to go to an office every day. And you have the knowledge that 18 years from now or sooner you won't be sitting in a roomful of other parents wondering about all the things you missed. You will sit there with the knowledge that you are so very blessed not to have missed out on so many of the things that most of the parents in this room missed out on. And that is the ultimate reason we do this. Either that, or deep down inside we are black belt masochists.

Work at Home Ideas for Teens Who Love Being Online

Work at Home Ideas for Teens Who Love Being Online

If you have teens at home this summer and they are looking to make some money for whatever it is that teens need money these days then this article is something that you should read. I am going to mention 5 work at home ideas for teens that spend a lot of time online that are guaranteed to make them a little extra cash; it could be a lot more than a little, but it all depends on how much they put into it. Some of these sites might require the person that joins to be 18 or older, but that shouldn't stop your teen; make an account for them if you like the idea. - Online Garage Sell
Now this is awesome! Teens can have their own garage sales by joining Ebay, Amazon, CraigsList, and other such websites. You should allow your teen to collect things that are not used around the house anymore and maybe even go around the neighborhood or to other family members as well to collect things. Once he or she has done this, they should make an inventory and start pricing things. Once this is finished they are ready to start making money with a little help from parents at the beginning.
- Paid posting
Using www.gather.com or www.mylot.com your teens can earn cash simply by posting their thoughts in a few sentences several times a day or by commenting on other people's posts. This will be simple and your kids can earn gift cards and even cash rewards monthly just by chatting.
- Paid blogging
If your teen loves to tell stories, post pictures online, or be on www.youtube.com a lot then maybe paid blogging can be for them. Help them start a free blog at www.blogger.com and then open up an Adsense account for them so that they can put ads on their sites. Once you've done that, then they should be allowed to use that site as a journal, a place to put all of their pictures and even all of their favorite videos. Let them know that they will make money by generating traffic and that to do that they will need to tell people about their site.
- Paid surveys
If you've heard of paid surveys online but you just don't think you can make a lot of money from then, you're probably right; your teens however can probably make some spare cash from them each month. Allow them to make an account at www.surveyspot.com and then they will be able to take surveys for money. They can also research other kids survey sites; there are a lot of them out there and it's nice to get money just by giving your opinions.
- Paid games
Now this is something that can be addicting for kids but it can also make them profits. Moola.com is a site that lets you play 3 simple games daily to win money for them. There is no required entrance fee at all for any of the games and you will have the chance to make up to 10 million dollars. Most people make about 10 or 20 dollars a week on here though. Get an invitation to this site and start letting your teen's gaming experience make them money.

How to Make Money Online with Jewelry

are many ways that you can supplement your income by selling it online. You don't need to have a big investment, or a store in your home. You really don't even need to have the jewelry in stock to make money online. Rings, necklaces, earrings and other trinkets are big business for a lot of stay at home moms and dads who want to make money online. There are several simple ways to set up shop and get started with your own easy online jewelry business. You just need to know where to begin.
If you think about department stores and even discount stores, many of them bring in new merchandise on a seasonal basis. They clear out the old to make room for the new. What happens to that merchandise that they just clear out? They either put it on sale, and offer customers a clearance price, or it ends up at discounted stores like TJ Maxx or Marshalls. Many times there are sales on eBay too where you can buy bags of jewelry by the pound at deep discounts. I have seen some of this jewelry go for $0.99 on some auctions. Imagine just winning one of these bids, getting the jewelry, going to your local craft store, repairing pieces that need repair, and reselling them on eBay at the true value of the piece. You could make hundreds of dollars easily.
Another way to make money with jewelry online is to build a website. You don't even need a product. Many big name companies like Ice.com and Diamonds.com have affiliate programs that you can sign up for, and they will pay you a percentage of each sale from banners and text links that you add to you website. Build a big enough website, write lots of articles about jewelry, and soon you will drive a lot of traffic to your site. You can also use the pay per click method to drive traffic to your website. Affiliate commissions add up fast.
Finally, you can create your own pieces and sell them online. Most large craft stores sell everything you need to get started. Use your creativity and have fun with it. You can choose to sell your creations on eBay or build your own website. Original pieces will attract attention, and you might find yourself building a very profitable online business. Creating your own jewelry also lends itself to grabbing a stand at local flea market, and making a few extra dollars on the weekend. Call around town to some of the local boutiques, and find buyers for your jewelry.
There are many ways to make money online with jewelry, and there are no limits to how much you can accomplish with a little ingenuity.

Making Money Online - Benefits of an Online Blog

Making Money Online - Benefits of an Online

There are many benefits to starting an online blog. People from all walks of life can become writers and share their varied points of view. From that point on, writers can use a blog to become successful in a variety of topics. Whether they blog about wider topics such as celebrities, or interior design; or they blog about a single, specific medical condition, and so forth: a blog is a great way to attract a specific crowd of readers, make money, or even add to a resume. Writing Online for Money
One of the more attractive reasons for online blogging is the potential cash that a person could bring in. There are no ways to gain revenue from an online blog through companies such as Google, who offer programs that pay websites (not just blogs,) a small portion of the revenue earned through their advertising. However, guidelines must be followed - such as not clicking on your own links, and not encouraging others to do so.
It should be noted that very few people are successful enough to bring in enough revenue on a single blog. Blogging, as with many other forms of online publication, is not a "quick cash cow."
That being said, in most cases the revenue takes a while to build up and is often significantly smaller than what a person may have expected. This is why many professional online freelance writers recommend that you "don't put all of your eggs in one basket." By writing for several different online websites, or running several blogs - it is easier to reach monetary goals rather than expecting it to come easily from one place.
Benefits of a Blog for Resumes
Surprisingly, a successful blog can also be used on a resume. For example, if you're seeking a job as a writer for a financial magazine, and you have even a small following on a blog - show it off. The blog is a great way to let your potential employer know that you're serious about the job, and that you can attract the readers they're looking for.
Negative Aspects for Online Writing
Unfortunately, there is no form of true "internet police." An online writer will soon discover that their hard work has been stolen and reproduced on another blog, likely one with an automatic feed. This is often frustrating, so it's important to monitor your online library through Google Alerts. Google Alerts will email you every time a specific phrase you've entered, comes up in their search engines.
Overall, making money online is no simple task. There are thousands upon thousands of scams online that suggest quick, easy money with little to no work. However, the real world carries over from the online world - money and status must be worked for, they will not magically appear overnight.

Home Based Business Ebooks - Which Guides Help You Make Money Online

I've been trying to make money online to pay my college tuition. I've been through the ringer with all kinds of programs, ebooks, success stories, research and all that, and I have to say that so far, making money online and working from home seem like more trouble than it's worth. There is a lot of hype, and not a lot of cold, hard facts to be found anywhere on the internet. So, then, reader, if you too want to know how to make money online, then you've come to the right place. Instead of buying all of the ebooks you could ever want to read, and wasting lots of money on them, read these reviews first, and save yourself some trouble and some money. I've bought all of them, and most have not been worth my time. We'll start with the newest program out there, one that is making a heck of a lot of noise in the internet marketing world, the $7 Secret (www.7dollarsecret.com). This book is useful for one thing and one thing only: successful pricing. The entirety of the 37 page book is focused on the theory of writing and producing a lot of ebooks that will all sell for $7 each. That's really all I got out of it, and for the price, you can do better. It does include a helpful script for your webpages that may help you sell more, but you would need another source to learn how to actually market your products. This is more for the advanced crowd who knows what they're doing.
The ever popular "Rich Jerk" series (www.therichjerk.com) is by far the worst of the lot. The videos of this guy driving in his lambourghini and hanging out at his mansion with some scantily clad women are cute and all, but what does the book have to say? Well, when he calls himself the rich jerk, he really means it. This guy's book and the tips he's giving out are about as unethical as it comes. Most of the programs that he is advertising in his book are additional paid programs. If paying for the ability to pay for something else strikes you as wrong, well, that's exactly what you're buying with the Rich Jerk Volume 1. Volume 2, while you're paying for much less, tells you to scam people on Craigslist, prey on their emotions, and hope that you make sales by spamming them. You also get a "free website" but that basically means that he's giving you a website template that you can download for free from any number of places. All of the work of changing it around to suit your needs is left for you to figure out.
The Life Empowered Guide (http://www.lifeempowered.com/) comes with a hefty price tag, but is a pretty good guide when all is said and done. The best part of the guide is that it tells you how to market your website successfully without doing a lot of Pay-per-click advertising and banner ads. The program itself is really nothing all that special, and you could find out everything about it if you did enough searching on the internet (and granted, it would take a lot), but for the absolute basic stuff, put all in one easy-to-use guide, this is the way to go. It is also very easy to use for the computer illiterate, though that often means that you won't be making a killing off of the profits.
When it comes to working from home in a home based business, you can do no wrong with the Bum Marketing Method (www.bummarketingmethod.com). This site gives you a lot of tips on article marketing and affiliate sales programs, though Travis is pushing a lot of affiliate programs along the way. His main guide, however, is free of charge, and easy to follow for beginners. Highly recommended.
The Green-Machine Guide to Higher Earnings (www.green-machine.info/) is a good guide, and a great value at the cost (only $10). The introductory portion of the book is absolutely free and accessible from the homepage, but for the real tips, you need to buy the guide. The free information is enough to get you started, and to help you earn the $10 for the remainder of the book. The complete guide lets you in on better ways to make money by writing articles, doing online surveys, doing trial offers, and selling on eBay, and includes one of the best books on Affiliate Marketing programs available, expanding and explaining how to take the Bum Marketing Method even farther. His guide starts with the basics, then moves up the difficulty ladder slowly but surely, and eventually gets to the point where you are making your own websites and doing sales from there. He shows how even a single article can make you money for months on end, and offers a lot of support to buyers via email. I did more with this book than most of the others combined, and recommend it highly, though experienced internet marketers will not find too much that they didn't already know. Best of all, unlike all of the other programs on this list, there is nothing extra to buy once you sign up for the initial ebook, and he only pushes free marketing methods.
Success University (http://cl.successuniversity.com/welcome.aspx) is another well-known program which will help you make money and learn a lot about how to do internet marketing, but it is easily the most expensive at around $200 to start. You will also need to build a downline, meaning that part of your profit will come from the fact that you need to market Success University to others, which can be very difficult given the price tag. However, the tools and tips that they give you are absolutely top-notch, the classes are excellent, and you get an excellent start on recruitment because the people who signed you up will eventually be putting people into your downline to help you out. It's a lot of work, and a lot of money, but it is very much worth the time and effort. Because it is so expensive, however, you might want to try out another program first.
The most popular of all of these programs is Steven Wagenheim's Honest Income Program (www.honestincomeprogram.com) . I'm torn when it comes to reviewing this book, because I think that the premise is sound and the book offers good information, but at the new price of $47, it seems way too much money for what you're getting. I've already written an in-depth review of this program once (read that here), so I'm not going to go through the specifics again, but this ebook package offers you a guide to three home based businesses that have been laid out for you piece by piece. They are so well known and used, however, that if you plan to make any money off of them, you need to do a lot more work and research.
So how do I recommend starting on your work at home business? I suggest that you invest some time in the Bum Marketing Method and the Green-Machine Guide to Higher Earnings, because these are really good guides for beginners, and give you all the tools you need to get started on something right away. Depending on what you want to focus on, you can find a lot more products out there, but work through these completely before buying into some more. They will explain how you can make money online, and get a home based business started...the rest is up to you!

How to Make Easy Money

Steps

Selling

  1. 1
Burn copies of all your CDs and DVDs, then sell the originals. Nice collections can be sold individually for a price that you think is fair, but if you want to compete with online media downloads, sell everything else for a few dollars apiece..
  2. 2
Raid your house for items you no longer need. Put all the cheap items in a yard sale and advertise it with signs around the neighborhood and a post on the free classifieds or on Craigslist. Sell anything worth more than a few dollars individually on Amazon, Craigslist, or GeoLi.st, a smartphone app that allows you to show your sale items to other people in the area.
  3. 3
Sell stock photos. Stock photos are simple, somewhat nondescript images that people can use for a fee in the articles, brochures, presentations, etc. They don’t earn much apiece, but if you upload a nice little collection, the sales can really add up – especially since photos can be sold over and over. Best of all, it doesn’t get much easier than clicking off a few decent shots, uploading them, and waiting.
  4. 4
Sell your hair. If your hair is over 10 inches (25cm) long and untreated, you can sell it for hundreds of dollars; really long hair that is minimally washed can fetch thousands, especially if the color is unusual.
  5. 5
Sell plasma. Plasma is a component of blood and the process of donating it is similar to giving blood. Though you can’t technically sell plasma, you will be compensated for your time to the tune of $20 to $45, depending on the location. Your body regenerates plasma after the donation, meaning you can repeat this process regularly (check local donation centers’ regulations for rules on frequency). If you haven't been to the doctor in a while, going through the pre-screen is also good way to get a free health checkup.[1]
  6. 6
Sell sperm. Sperm samples can sell for between $40 and $100 apiece. Though the application process is lengthy and only about 5% of applicants meet the criteria,[2] once you’re accepted, you have a great outlet for making pocket money whenever necessary.
  7. 7
Sell things you find outside. You’d be amazed what people with no access to the outdoors will pay for things like dried pinecones, manzanita or curly-willow branches, vines, Chinese lanterns, driftwood, cattails, and other interesting or unusually shaped plants. Search some craft sites to see what people are looking for and the next time you prune, let everything dry out in your garage for a month before selling it online.

Marketing

  1. 1
Find a focus group in your area. Focus groups pop up sporadically but tend to pay very well, especially considering that most take an hour or two. Search for focus groups in your area with a site like FindFocusGroups.com.
  2. 2
Fill out online surveys. Companies who want to know what is on the minds of their customers are willing to pay for your opinion. Online surveys won’t make you rich or replace your day job, but they’re an easy way to make a little extra cash without needing any special skills or a lot of time.
  3. 3
Market via Twitter. If you have a lot of followers and presence on Twitter (or know how to cultivate them), use your account to promote news and interesting sites or announce deals for a site like Ad.ly.
  4. 4
Turn your car into a moving advertisement. Companies will actually pay you to “wrap” your car in an ad and go about your daily commute. In big, busy cities, this can earn you hundreds of dollars monthly. There are also bumper-sticker programs if you aren’t willing to go all out.

Odd Jobs

  1. 1
Walk dogs or board pets. People in cities pay well to make sure that their pets are taken care of when they’re away, and walking dogs is a good way to get some fresh air and exercise while having fun. If you live in a house or pet-friendly apartment, you can also post ads offering to board pets for $20 to $50 per day (depending on what the competition is like in your area). This is especially effective during the holidays when people are likeliest to travel.
  2. 2
Make money via your smartphone. Apps like Field Agent, CheckPoints, WeReward, MyLikes, and Gigwalk allow you to complete small tasks (anything from snapping a photo of yourself at a cafe to scanning a barcode) for a few dollars. These are great ways to make money while you’re out to lunch or going about your grocery shopping.
  3. 3
Become a virtual assistant. If you have administrative experience and would like an opportunity to work from home, look into virtual assisting jobs at a site like virtualAssistants.com or TaskRabbit.com. It may take about a week to be processed, but the work is extremely convenient for stay-at-home parents or for filling in the gaps of a part-time schedule.
  4. 4
Make the most of an unusual skill. You might think your talent is totally unmarketable, but a little creativity can go a long way. If you do calligraphy, write wedding invitations and stationary as a freelancer; weddings are big business, meaning you can charge handsomely for your services. If you play an instrument or dance – even if you’re no virtuoso – you can sideline as a busker; performing in an area with bars or any other place where people are likely to be uninhibited will make the money flow more freely. If you have a truly bizarre talent that is fun to show off at parties but otherwise has no practical value, make (good quality) videos of yourself, post them to YouTube, and try to go viral; once the page views/subscriptions start to build, you can use the page to do some affiliate marketing.

Renting

  1. 1
Rent out a parking space or driveway. Have a parking spot you don’t need in a busy area? Renting it out is a no-maintenance way to turn it into a source of income. Find out what renting a parking space costs in your area and offer yours for a little less.
  2. 2
Rent out a spare room. Taking on a boarder will involve some initial setup (prepping the room, posting an ad, screening people), but after that you can enjoy a sizeable extra paycheck every month. What’s more, renting a room isn’t nearly as involved as renting an apartment or a house; since you will be on-site, you won’t have to worry about wild parties on your property or make late-night trips across town any time the pilot light on the water heater goes out.

Miscellaneous

  1. 1
Host a bring-your-own-beverage party, then sell all the recyclables. Be sure to mark a large trash bin with a recycling sign to minimize cleanup.
  2. 2
Search for unclaimed money or property. Go to unclaimed.org to be linked to the official pages of US states or Canadian provinces you have lived in, then follow the instructions to search for and, if necessary, claim funds owed to you.
  3. 3
Find sign-up incentives. If you were thinking about switching bank accounts, getting a new credit card, or recommending a company you like to a friend, for example, shop around for cash-back bonuses before making your decision.

How-to Easily Create a Training Class for Small Businesses

It's certainly fair to say that in today's corporate world, staying on the cutting edge of training and development is a must if you intend to compete with other businesses in your industry. Many times with small businesses, it isn't possible to maintain a training and development department. Often, it is left up to the department supervisor or company Human Resources director to create and facilitate training for your business. Most of the work that goes into training and developing your employees is gathering content (a.k.a. CONTENT RESEARCH). The second largest task on the road to building a successful training curriculum for a small company is organizing the research in a way that makes it easy to convey the information to employees in a format that makes it possible to later retain that information. In this article, we will discover a simplified version of the process that the training coordinators at those big companies are using.
There are 6 steps to think about when developing a training class; Needs Assessment, Analysis, Design Coursework, Develop Coursework, , Implement Course, Evaluate Course. Six steps may seem like a lot, but when you break down each step into its smaller components, most of the work can be delegated to other employees.
Creating a Training Class for Small Businesses Step One: Needs Assessment. This step is exactly what it implies, analyzing the need for the training you are about to develop. If you wish for your employees to be skilled in Excel, then your simple needs analysis is done! It's needed because you want it to happen. However, if you think that this software training is something that would make work faster at your company, but you aren't sure, more analysis is recommended. The easiest way to perform training needs analysis is to send out a simple survey to your employees asking them their level of experience with the program and in what ways knowledge of this program may expedite work for them. Additionally, a separate manager's survey might be considered during this step. Often times, a manager is more objective about what will help your work flow. If, at the end of the analysis stage you decide it necessary to develop training on this topic, move on to step two.
Creating a Training Class for Small Businesses Step Two: Analysis. Trainers at big corporations are always aware of a fundamental fact about successful training development: Each learner is at a different level of education both on a broad spectrum and potentially on this particular topic. It's always best to address training to the least educated learner in the class. For example, if you have ten employees and 3 of them are at an intermediate level with Excel, you will target your training at the other 7 to get them caught up before moving on to advanced use of Excel. There are a couple of ways to evaluate your learner's competency level. The most obvious is a test. Have one of the intermediate or advanced employees create a test that involves simple and intermediate uses of Excel. Alternatively, it may be more feasible to create a survey that asks questions about comfort levels with the use of Excel.
Another part of this stage is laying out the ground work for the class. The easiest way to analyze the training content itself is to recruit a SME (Subject Matter Expert). Have one of your advanced users create a loose outline of how to accomplish each task that will be taught during the class. For example, if part of the class is about how to find information on an Excel Spreadsheet, the SME's loose outline would say something about opening the file, selecting sort data, and sorting by a specific category. Remember, during this stage we are just analyzing the coursework. To do that we have to draft out the course work. Have your SME repeat this step for every "teaching point", the point that you want your employees to remember and learn. Once this step is complete, you should have a general outline of what the class will specifically teach the learners.
Creating a Training Class for Small Businesses Step Three: Design Coursework. To properly design training, it's best to first decide a stopping point. How much are you going to teach? The second step should be to outline the content. Using Excel as the example, it may be that you want all employees to learn up to an intermediate level. So you will here list all the tasks that an intermediate user should be able to complete. Again, if you know nothing about the training topic, use a SME for this portion of the process. Once you've outlined the content, it's time to complete the training plan. The training plan (see a sample training plan for small businesses) is all about making a list and timeline of what should be taught, how it should be taught, who should teach it, and in what order should the teaching points occur. Once you have collected the task list for the Intermediate Excel user, you can begin the plan. Answer these questions in your training plan: Will this class be taught in a classroom or online? Who will develop the coursework? Who will teach the class? When will the class happen? What are the teaching points? How will you know the information has been learned? What are the gaps between what you will teach and what the learner might run across in the real world? (You must plan to fill these gaps when developing the coursework.) What will the learning media be? (Handouts, slideshow presentation, overhead projectors.) What will learning tests consist of? (In class participation, written tests, oral quizzing, etc.)Lastly, in what order will the teaching points be discussed?
Creating a Training Class for Small Businesses Step Four: Develop Coursework.
Using all the information you've gathered so far, find your best SME to develop the coursework. The coursework developer should be allowed some creative room in order to work all concepts into the coursework. Carefully select your developer, as this person needs to be able to put technical information into classroom acceptable lecture format. Also, they should be good at writing, organizing information, and know about the topic being trained. With all information in hand, ask your SME developer to determine the best order for teaching points first. From there, they should outline how to complete each component of the task list step by step. Once this task has been completed, the developer should write a script for the class facilitator if that person is not competent in Excel, or the course being offered. Ideally, your developer will also be able to facilitate the class. This will save a lot of time in the development stage as the developer will only need to outline notes for themselves to teach the class.
Development doesn't stop at class content, however. Next the developer must include the testing that is outlined in the training plan. Also, this is the time to weave common themes in the coursework and all other information contained within the training plan, including how to fill the gap between the classroom and real life application of the new skill. The last part of developing coursework is to create handouts, job-aids for back at their work stations, written test materials, and create visual illustrations for use in the classroom or online.
Creating a Training Class for Small Businesses Step Five: Implement Course.
If you are teaching a large group of learners, it is best to conduct a pilot class. This will allow the developer and facilitator work out any "kinks" in the design and implementation of the class. This is also the perfect time for the project sponsor (you) to attend the class and ensure the level of content and desired training points are conveyed efficiently. Once the pilot has been completed and all materials and handouts have been revised, it's time to kickoff the course. If you are teaching a small group, skip the pilot and deliver the training.
Creating a Training Class for Small Businesses Step Six: Evaluate Course.
This is an integral part of a successful training course. As an ongoing activity, assess the retention of knowledge by you learners. Pop quizzes are not necessary, you should be able to evaluate success by your bottom line, improved employee behavior, or enhanced proven skillsets. If your learners cannot use the training provided to them or do not retain the information given to them, it may be necessary to adjust the coursework. However, more often than not, including job aids and excercises within the training environment will remedy most information retention challenges in your workforce.

How to Build Your Own Disney Movie Collection

Ever since the first Walt Disney movie appeared on movie screens in 1937, fans haven't been able to get enough of "Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs", as well as the rest of his colorful characters. Since that time, Disney and his company have produced a vast array of movies. If you want to compile your own selection, read this informative article and learn some tips on how to build your own Disney movie collection!

Tip #1 Decide On What Your Collection Is Going to Consist Of Yes, you can surely collect every one of the movies the Disney Company has released to date. However, that's a ton of movies! According to The Walt Disney Resource website, thus far, there are 555 Feature Films starting from "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and ending with "Casanova" (2006). There are also 44 Disney Animated Films starting with "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and ending with "Home on the Range" (2004). (Yes, there are repeated titles in these lists.) There are also 102 Disney Channel Original Movies, from "Tiger Town" (1983) to "Go Figure" (2005). And, let's not forget the 55 Wonderful World of Disney Television Movies which run from "Beverly Hills Family Robinson" (1997) to "Naughty or Nice" (2004).
These approximately 700 movie titles aren't all of them either. They don't include the remakes that come out from time to time. For example, the movie "Bambi" was released on video in 1989. The movie is also available in a 2- disc Special Edition. And, there's the "Bambi 55th Anniversary Limited Edition". The same movie, but under different covers. Then, of course, there's "Bambi II" which was released in 2006.
So the first tip on how to build your own Disney movie collection is to ask yourself, "What Disney movies do I want to collect?" You may want to collect only your personal favorites, the ones that are animated, the non-animated movies, or the movies that feature your favorite Disney character. The choice is up to you!
Tip #2 Decide Between VHS and DVD Formats
DVD Disney movies do have some advantages over the VHS type. They're smaller and easier to store and they offer a better picture quality. As VHS videos age, and are watched over and over again, they simply wear out, break or become otherwise unusable. As long as DVD movies aren't scratched or broken, they should last for a much longer time.
Tip #3 How to Start Your Disney Movie Collection
There are a couple ways to start your movie collection. You can use the "Fast Track" or the "Slow Track." Personally, I prefer the latter. It's more fun and rewarding. Taking the quick way seems almost like cheating.
The "Fast Track" is to join the "Disney Movie Club"and start buying the movies you want. Every movie the Disney Company has ever made is available. You'll also be notified when new movies come out on video or DVD.
On the other hand, the "Slow Track" is finding the Disney videos and DVDs you want to put in your movie collection by checking garage sales, yard sales and flea markets. You can also find them at online auctions like eBay® or Yahoo!. The Half.com website, which is run by eBay, also sells movies.
Important Note: The Walt Disney Company has placed some of their classic, animated movies into their "vault". This means, they aren't available from Disney all the time. The company says they do this so the public won't get tired of these classics. To build your own Disney movie collection, you'll need to find copies of these movies from a private source. Or, you'll have to wait until the company "unlocks their vault" and releases the movies once again. When they do, you'll only have a couple months before the Disney movies go off sale again for, I believe, ten years.
Tip #4 Keep Track of Your Disney Movie Collection
You can keep track of your movie collection with a good old fashioned pencil and paper. This is fine if you plan on only amassing a few titles. Or, if you're going to build a large collection, you can find plenty of software programs to make the job easier.
Tip #5 How to Store Your Disney Movie Collection
The final tip on how to build your own Disney movie collection involves storage. The best way to do this is to buy a multimedia cabinet. Place it in an area of your home that's cool and dry and out of direct sunlight. When you're not viewing them, keep your VHS or DVD movies in your cabinet and they'll stay safe.
